Receiving a 550 SPF error (often accompanied by the message “Sender Policy Framework fail”) means the recipient’s mail server rejected your email because it could not verify that mybox is authorized to send mail on behalf of your domain.
SPF is a security record in your DNS settings that acts as an “authorized sender list.” If this record is missing, incomplete, or contains typos, external servers (like Gmail or Outlook) may treat your legitimate emails as “spoofing” attempts and block them entirely.

How it works
When you send an email, the receiving server looks up your domain’s DNS records to find the SPF entry. It then compares the IP address of the server that sent the email to the list of authorized IPs in that record. If there is no match, the server issues a 550 error.
At mybox, we provide a standard SPF record that covers all our mail infrastructure. If your domain is registered or parked with us, this record is usually generated automatically.
Distinction Block
MX vs. SPF MX (Mail Exchange) records tell the world where to deliver mail sent to you. SPF (Sender Policy Framework) records tell the world which servers are allowed to send mail from you. Both must be correct for your email to function reliably.
How to Resolve
To fix a 550 SPF error, you must verify that your DNS zone contains the correct entries.
1. Access DNS Management
- Log in to your mybox panel and navigate to the Domains section.
- Select your domain from the list.
- Go to the Parked tab and click the Manage DNS button.
2. Verify the SPF Record Look for a TXT record. To ensure your mail is delivered correctly through mybox, it must look exactly like this:
“v=spf1 include:_mail.mybox.com ~all”
3. Verify MX Records While in the DNS manager, ensure your MX records are pointing to the correct mybox delivery nodes:
mx-1.mybox.commx-2.mybox.com
Practical Implications
- Propagation Time: If you recently updated these records, it can take anywhere from 1 to 24 hours for the changes to spread across the internet. During this time, you may still see the 550 error.
- External DNS: If your domain is registered elsewhere (e.g., Godaddy or Namecheap) but points to mybox hosting, you must manually add the SPF string above to the DNS settings at your registrar.
- Multiple Services: If you use an additional service to send mail (like a newsletter tool or CRM), you must “include” them in the same SPF record. You should never have two separate SPF records for one domain.
Summary
A 550 SPF error is a signal that your domain’s “identity card” is missing or wrong. By ensuring your DNS contains the include:_mail.mybox.com entry, you authorize the mybox infrastructure to deliver your mail safely and avoid being flagged as a spammer.
