Creating custom patterns is one of the most efficient ways to manage a website on the mybox infrastructure. If you find yourself frequently building the same section-like a specific “Meet the Team” layout or a “Download PDF” banner-you can save it as a pattern.
This process essentially creates a reusable design template that you can deploy across your entire site with just two clicks.
Table of Contents
Step 1: Build Your Section
Start by creating the layout exactly as you want it to appear using standard WordPress blocks. You can combine any number of elements, such as columns, images, spacers, and buttons.
Step 2: Select the Blocks
You must select every block you want to include in the pattern.
- Method A: Click and drag your mouse over the blocks.
- Method B (Recommended): Open the List View (the three-line icon in the top toolbar), click the first block, hold Shift, and click the last block. This ensures you don’t accidentally miss any nested elements.
Step 3: Use the “Create Pattern” Menu
With the blocks selected, a toolbar will appear above them.
- Click the three dots (⋮) in the toolbar.
- Select Create pattern.
- Give your pattern a clear, descriptive name (e.g., “Main CTA Banner”).
Step 4: Choose Between Synced and Unsynced
This is the most critical decision in the process:
- Unsynced (Standard): Choose this if you want the layout to stay the same, but you plan to change the text or images on different pages. (e.g., a “Service” block where the description changes every time).
- Synced: Choose this if you want the exact same content everywhere. If you edit a Synced pattern later, the changes will instantly appear on every page where that pattern is used. (e.g., a “Newsletter Signup” form).
Step 5: Assign a Category and Save
You can assign your pattern to a category (like “Headers” or “Call to Action”) to keep your library organized. Once you click Create, your pattern is ready to use.
How to Reuse Your Pattern
To insert your new creation onto another page:
- Click the + (Block Inserter) in the top left.
- Go to the Patterns tab.
- Select My Patterns (or the category you assigned).
- Click your custom pattern to drop it onto the page.
Practical Implications
- Design Consistency: Using custom patterns ensures that button sizes, font spacings, and image alignments remain identical across your mybox site, providing a more professional user experience.
- Efficiency: Instead of manually recreating complex layouts, you can build a page in seconds by “stacking” your pre-made patterns.
- Maintenance: If you use Synced patterns for things like contact information, you only have to update it once in the pattern editor rather than hunting down every page on your site.
Summary
Custom patterns turn the WordPress block editor into a personalized design system. By choosing between Synced and Unsynced versions, you gain total control over how content is updated across your mybox hosting environment.
