SSH (Secure Shell) is a protocol for establishing encrypted, remote connections to servers. It lets you interact with your hosting environment directly from your computer’s terminal - without using a graphical interface.
All data transmitted over SSH is encrypted, which means commands, file contents, and authentication credentials are protected in transit.

What SSH is used for
SSH gives you direct access to your hosting environment at the command-line level. Common uses include:
- File management - navigate the file system, edit files, set permissions
- Running scripts - execute PHP, or shell scripts directly on the server
- Deploying code - push updates via git pull or custom deployment scripts
- Database operations - run MySQL queries or import/export database dumps
- Secure file transfer - SFTP and SCP protocols are both based on SSH
Connecting via SSH
To connect, you need an SSH client and your hosting credentials (hostname, username, port).
| Operating system | Recommended client |
| Linux / macOS | Terminal (built-in, uses OpenSSH) |
| Windows | PuTTY or Windows Terminal with OpenSSH |
A basic connection command looks like this:
ssh username@hostname -p 22 You can also authenticate using SSH keys instead of a password - this is more secure and removes the need to enter credentials each time.
