Understanding Anycast DNS
Anycast is a modern DNS routing method that significantly improves the speed, reliability, and security of your domain’s DNS resolution. By switching to our anycast nameservers, your domain will benefit from faster response times and automatic failover protection.
What is Anycast?
Anycast DNS uses a single IP address that is shared across multiple servers distributed in different geographic locations worldwide. When someone queries your domain, the request is automatically routed to the nearest available server based on network topology and latency. This differs from traditional unicast DNS, where all queries go to a single server regardless of the user’s location.
The routing decision is made using network protocols like Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), which analyzes available routes and directs the DNS query using the shortest available path. This ensures optimal performance by minimizing the distance data must travel between the user and the DNS server.
Benefits of Using Anycast DNS
Switching to anycast nameservers provides several significant advantages for your domain. Performance is dramatically improved because DNS queries are answered by the geographically closest server, reducing latency and speeding up website load times. Global users experience consistently fast DNS resolution regardless of their location.
Reliability and uptime are greatly enhanced through automatic failover. If one server becomes unavailable due to maintenance, network issues, or other problems, DNS queries are automatically rerouted to the next nearest available server without any manual intervention. This ensures your domain remains accessible even during server outages.
Security against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks is substantially stronger with anycast. Instead of overwhelming a single server, malicious traffic is distributed across multiple nodes in the network, making it much harder for attackers to disrupt your DNS service. The distributed architecture provides natural load balancing and resilience against large-scale attacks.
How to Switch to Anycast Nameservers
To enable anycast DNS for your domain, you need to update the NS (nameserver) records at your domain registrar. The process is straightforward and typically takes effect within 24-48 hours due to DNS propagation.
Nameserver Details
Use the following nameservers for your domain:
- Primary: ns1-anycast.mybox.com
- Secondary: ns2-anycast.mybox.com
Step-by-Step Instructions
First, log in to your domain registrar’s control panel where you originally purchased or manage your domain name. Locate the DNS management or nameserver settings section, which may be labeled as “DNS Settings,” “Name Servers,” or “NS Records” depending on your registrar.
Afterwards the setting will be automatic for domains registered at mybox.
You can do this by going into the panel, there to Domains section and click on the right hand side on Actions menu and select there that you want to change the delegation.
Before making changes, copy all existing DNS records (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, etc.) from your current nameservers to ensure continuity of service. Make sure these records are properly configured in your new anycast DNS system before proceeding.
Update the nameserver records by replacing your current nameservers with the anycast nameservers listed above. Enter both:
– ns1-anycast.mybox.com
and
– ns2-anycast.mybox.com
in the designated fields, then save your changes.
DNS Propagation Timeline
After updating your nameservers, DNS propagation begins immediately, though the changes may take up to 24-48 hours to fully propagate worldwide. During this transition period, some users may still reach the old nameservers while others connect to the new ones based on cached DNS information. This is normal behavior and will resolve itself as caches expire across the internet.
