Domain parking and domain registration are two separate actions that are easy to confuse. This article explains what each one means and how they relate to each other.
What is domain parking?
Parking a domain means adding a domain name to your mybox panel - even if that domain is registered and maintained with a different provider.
When you park a domain, you are telling the mybox system that you plan to use this address for a website or email hosted here. To make that possible, you need to update the domain’s DNS servers at your current registrar to point to:
- ns1.mybox.com
- ns2.mybox.com
Once the DNS servers are updated, mybox becomes responsible for the domain’s DNS zone - the set of records that control how the domain behaves:
- A - points the domain to the IP address of your server
- CNAME - redirects subdomains (e.g., www, blog, shop) to the main domain
- MX - specifies the mail servers handling email for the domain
The DNS zone only becomes active after the DNS servers have been correctly pointed to mybox.
Why park a domain before changing DNS?
Parking allows you to prepare your hosting environment in advance. Once a domain appears in your panel, you can create a website or install WordPress before the DNS change takes effect. This is useful for avoiding downtime during migration.
What is domain registration?
Registering a domain means purchasing the right to use a domain name. Once you complete registration and payment, you become the domain subscriber - the only person authorized to manage and configure it.
A domain registered through mybox automatically appears in your panel and in the list of suggested addresses when adding a new website or installing a CMS. It is also delegated to mybox DNS servers by default, so no additional steps are needed on your part.
If needed, you can change the DNS servers to external ones at any time from your mybox panel.
Summary
- Domain registration - purchases a domain name through mybox, making you its subscriber with full management rights.
- Domain parking - adds an existing domain (registered elsewhere) to your mybox panel so you can prepare hosting in advance. Does not transfer ownership.
