PrestaShop allows you to customize your store for different countries by configuring languages, currencies, localization settings, and geolocation rules.
These settings help you provide a better shopping experience for international customers by displaying content in the appropriate language, currency, and regional format.
To access localization settings, log in to the PrestaShop administration panel and navigate to:
Improve → International
Here you will find four main sections:
- Localization

This is the quickest way to configure a store for a specific market.
Store Configuration
The configuration section allows you to define:

- Default country
- Default currency
- Default time zone
You can also enable automatic language detection based on the visitor’s browser settings.
When enabled, PrestaShop will attempt to display the store in the customer’s preferred language.
Local Units
This section controls the units used throughout the store.
Examples include:
- Weight (kg, lb)
- Distance (km, mi)
- Volume (L, gal)
- Dimensions (cm, in)
Choose the measurement system appropriate for your target market.
Languages
The Languages section allows you to manage the languages available in both the storefront and the administration panel.
View Installed Languages
By default, PrestaShop installs the language selected during the installation process.
Add a New Language
To add another language:
- Navigate to: International → Languages
- Click: Add New Language
- Complete the required fields.
Important settings include:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Language Name | Display name of the language |
| ISO Code | Two-letter language code (for example: en, ro, fr) |
| Language Code | Locale code (for example: en-US, ro-RO) |
| Date Format | Regional date display format |
After saving, the language will become available in your store.
Currencies
If you sell internationally, you may want customers to view prices in their local currency.
View Available Currencies
Navigate to:
International → Currencies
The default currency selected during installation will already be configured.
Add a New Currency
To add another currency:
- Click: Add New Currency
- Select the currency from the list.
- Configure the exchange rate.
- Save the changes.
Exchange Rates
Exchange rates are calculated relative to the store’s default currency.
For example:
- Default currency: EUR
- New currency: RON
The exchange rate determines how prices are converted and displayed.
You can also choose whether the currency selector is visible to customers.
Geolocation
The Geolocation section allows PrestaShop to identify visitors based on their IP address and apply country-specific rules.
Enable Geolocation
Geolocation can be used to:
- Display country-specific content
- Restrict access to certain countries
- Prevent orders from selected locations
Restrict Access by Country
After enabling geolocation, you can decide how PrestaShop handles visitors from restricted countries.
Available options include:
- Allow full access
- Allow browsing but prevent orders
- Block access entirely
Whitelisted IP Addresses
The IP whitelist allows specific IP addresses to bypass geolocation restrictions.
This can be useful for:
- Administrators
- Developers
- Testing environments
Whitelisted IPs retain access regardless of country restrictions.
Example Configuration
A store selling primarily in Romania and Europe might use:
- Default language: Romanian
- Additional language: English
- Default currency: RON
- Additional currency: EUR
- Time zone: Europe/Bucharest
- Geolocation enabled for country-specific content
Summary
The International section in PrestaShop allows you to manage localization, languages, currencies, and geolocation settings. By configuring these options correctly, you can tailor your store to different markets, display prices in multiple currencies, provide localized content, and control access based on visitors’ geographic location.
