FileZilla is a free, cross-platform FTP client that allows you to manage files between your local computer and your mybox server. Using this tool is the standard way to upload website files, manage assets, or download backups.
Table of Contents
Step 1: Obtain your connection details
Before opening FileZilla, you need your unique access credentials. These can be found in the mybox panel under the FTP Accounts section.
You will need the following four pieces of information:
- Host: Your server address (e.g.,
ftp.mybox.comor your server’s IP address). - Username: Your FTP account login (e.g.,
accountname). - Password: The password you set for that specific FTP account.
- Port: Use 21 for standard FTP or 22 for SFTP (recommended for security).
Step 2: Configure the connection in FileZilla
While you can use the “Quickconnect” bar at the top, it is better to use the Site Manager to save your settings for future use.
- Open Site Manager: Click the icon in the top-left corner (📁) or go to File > Site Manager.
- Create New Site: Click New Site and give it a name (e.g., “mybox Website”).
- Enter Server Details:
- Protocol: Select SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol (preferred) or FTP.
- Host: Enter your host address.
- Port: Enter 22 (for SFTP) or 21 (for FTP).
- Logon Type: Select Normal.
- User & Password: Enter your credentials from Step 1.
- Connect: Click Connect. If a “Unknown host key” window appears (common with SFTP), check “Always trust this host” and click OK.
Step 3: Navigating the interface
Once connected, the FileZilla interface is divided into two main sections:
- Left Panel (Local Site): Displays the files and folders currently on your computer.
- Right Panel (Remote Site): Displays the files and folders currently on your mybox server.
Step 4: Transferring files
To make your website visible to the public, you must upload your files to the correct directory on the server.
- Locate the Root Folder: In the Right Panel, double-click the folder named
public_html. This is where your website’s index file and assets must reside. - Select Local Files: In the Left Panel, find the files you wish to upload.
- Upload: Drag the files from the Left Panel to the Right Panel. Alternatively, right-click the selected files and choose Upload.
- Monitor Progress: You can see the status of your transfers in the bottom pane of the window.
Practical Implications
- Encrypted Connections: Always prefer SFTP (Port 22) over standard FTP. SFTP encrypts your password and data, preventing them from being intercepted in transit.
- Passive Mode: If you experience connection issues or “timed out” errors, go to the Transfer Settings tab in the Site Manager and ensure Passive Mode is selected.
- File Permissions: If your website shows a “403 Forbidden” error after upload, check the file permissions in the right panel (right-click > File permissions). Normal files should typically be
644and folders755.
Summary
FileZilla provides a reliable bridge between your development environment and your mybox infrastructure. By using the Site Manager and opting for SFTP, you ensure your file management is both efficient and secure. Once your files are in the public_html directory, your changes will be live on the web.
