Follow the steps below to enable two-step verification and generate an app password.
Table of Contents
Enable Two-Step Verification
- Sign in to your Google account.
- Open the Security section.
- Under the How you sign in to Google section, click 2-Step Verification.
- Click Get started.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to configure your preferred verification method.
You can choose one or more of the following options:
- Google prompts on your trusted devices

- Confirm your chosen verification method.
- Click Turn on to activate two-step verification.
Once enabled, your Google account will require an additional verification step whenever you sign in from a new device or browser.
Important: Make sure you save your backup codes in a secure location. They can help you regain access to your account if you lose your primary verification device.
Generate an App Password
App passwords are available only after two-step verification has been enabled.
You may need an app password when configuring Gmail in older email clients or devices that do not support Sign in with Google.
To generate an app password:
- Sign in to your Google account.
- Open the Security section.
- Under How you sign in to Google, click App passwords.
- You may be asked to sign in again to verify your identity.
- In the Select app menu, choose the application you want to use.
- In the Select device menu, choose your device or select Other (Custom name) and enter a descriptive name.
- Click Generate.
Google will display a 16-character app password.
- Copy the generated password and use it in your email application instead of your regular Google account password.
Important: App passwords are displayed only once. If you lose the password, you must generate a new one.
When Should You Use an App Password?
You may need an app password when configuring Gmail in:
- Older versions of email clients such as Outlook or Thunderbird
- Printers and scanners with email functionality
- Legacy mobile applications
- Devices that do not support OAuth authentication
Most modern applications support direct Google authentication and do not require app passwords.
Revoke an App Password
If you no longer use a device or application, you should revoke its app password.
To remove an app password:
- Open your Google account’s Security section.
- Click App passwords.
- Locate the app password you want to remove.
- Click the Delete icon next to it.
The application will immediately lose access to your Gmail account.
Troubleshooting
If you cannot find the App passwords option, verify that:
- Two-step verification is enabled
- Your account is not managed by an organization that restricts app passwords
- You are not using an account with advanced protection enabled
- You are signed in with a personal Google account that supports app passwords
Summary
Enabling two-step verification significantly improves the security of your Google account.
For applications that do not support modern authentication methods, app passwords provide a secure way to connect without exposing your primary account password.
Regularly review your security settings and remove unused app passwords to keep your account protected.
