In some cases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Multiple users may share the same IP address.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internet providers may assign IP addresses dynamically.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A previously compromised server may have caused the IP address to be listed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, legitimate messages may occasionally be blocked if they originate from a listed IP address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"RBL_Lists_Used\"><\/span>RBL Lists Used<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following RBL providers may be used for spam detection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>bl.spamcop.net\nzen.spamhaus.org\ndnsbl-1.uceprotect.net\ncbl.abuseat.org\nvirus.rbl.jp\ndyndns.rbl.jp\ndb.wpbl.info\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Global_Protection\"><\/span>Global Protection<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless of individual mailbox or anti-spam settings, global RBL protection is permanently enabled using the following highly trusted blacklists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>bl.spamcop.net\nzen.spamhaus.org\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These lists contain IP addresses that are known to send spam or have a strong reputation for malicious email activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Messages originating from servers listed in these databases may be rejected automatically before delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Important_Notes\"><\/span>Important Notes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RBL filtering works on the basis of the sending server&#8217;s IP address, not the sender&#8217;s email address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This has two important consequences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Whitelisting_Email_Addresses_Is_Ineffective\"><\/span>1. Whitelisting Email Addresses Is Ineffective<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the filter evaluates the sending server rather than the email address itself, adding a sender&#8217;s email address to a trusted list will not bypass an RBL block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_The_Sender_May_Not_Be_Responsible\"><\/span>2. The Sender May Not Be Responsible<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sender&#8217;s server may be listed due to the actions of another user sharing the same server or IP address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, mail server administrators are responsible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monitoring outgoing email traffic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preventing spam from being sent through their servers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking whether their server IP addresses appear on RBL databases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Requesting removal from blacklists when appropriate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Effectiveness\"><\/span>Effectiveness<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RBL filtering is considered highly effective because it blocks messages from known spam sources before they enter the mail system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, because blacklists are maintained by third-party organizations and conditions on the Internet change constantly, RBL filtering is most effective when used alongside other anti-spam mechanisms such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CleanBox<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SPF<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DKIM<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DMARC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Content-based spam filters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Summary\"><\/span>Summary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RBL (Realtime Blackhole List) is an anti-spam technology that checks whether the sending mail server&#8217;s IP address appears on known spam blacklists.
