A sitemap should help Google find the pages you want indexed, but it can do the opposite if it lists URLs that should not appear in search, points to redirects, or contains old entries.

This matters most when new pages are not appearing in Google, old URLs keep showing up in reports, or Google Search Console shows sitemap warnings. Google Search Console is useful here because it helps you monitor how Google discovers, crawls, and indexes your site. In most cases, each listed URL should return a normal live page, use the preferred canonical version, and be allowed in search results. The sitemap is a suggestion to Google, not a command, so clear signals matter.

When the sitemap includes URLs that conflict with page-level signals, Google has to decide which signal to trust. That can lead to slower indexing, ignored entries, or coverage warnings in Google Search Console.

Common XML sitemap errors that cause confusion

The most common problem is including URLs with a noindex directive. A noindex page tells Google not to keep that page in search results. If the same page also appears in the sitemap, the sitemap says “index this” while the page says “do not index this.” That conflict weakens the sitemap.

Another common issue is listing URLs that redirect. A sitemap should point to the final destination URL, not an old address that sends users and crawlers elsewhere. Redirecting URLs create an extra step and make the sitemap less precise.

Broken canonicals are also important. A canonical tag tells Google which version of a page is the preferred one. If the sitemap lists one URL but the page canonicals to a different URL, Google may ignore the sitemap entry and follow the canonical instead. This is especially confusing when the canonical points to the wrong page, a non-working page, or a URL pattern you no longer use.

Outdated entries are another frequent cause. These are URLs for deleted pages, staging pages, test pages, or old versions of content that no longer belong in your live site structure. If they stay in the sitemap, Google may keep crawling them instead of focusing on your current pages.

You may also see problems with inconsistent URL formats. Examples include mixing http and https, listing both www and non-www versions, or including parameter-based URLs that are not meant to be indexed. A sitemap works best when every URL uses one preferred format.

Quick comparison of sitemap signals

URL in sitemap

Page signal

Likely result

Live indexable URL

Self-canonical

Clear signal

Noindex URL

Noindex meta or header

Conflicting signal

Redirecting URL

301 or 302 redirect

Weak sitemap entry

Non-preferred URL

Canonical to another page

Google may ignore listed URL

Deleted or old URL

404, 410, or irrelevant content

Outdated sitemap entry

How to check your sitemap yourself

Open the sitemap file in your browser and review a sample of URLs. Check that they are real pages you want indexed.

Click several URLs from different sections of the sitemap. Confirm that they load normally and do not redirect.

Check whether each page is indexable. Look for pages that use noindex or are clearly not meant for search, such as thank-you pages, admin areas, filtered URLs, or internal test pages.

Compare the sitemap URL with the page canonical. The canonical should usually match the exact URL listed in the sitemap.

Look for old content paths, duplicate URL formats, or staging subdomains. These should not remain in a live sitemap.

Review the Sitemaps and indexing reports in Google Search Console for warnings about submitted URLs that are excluded, redirected, or not selected as canonical. For indexing checks, see How to check a website’s indexing in Google.

How to correct the file and keep signals clean

Remove any URL that should not be indexed. That includes noindex pages, redirected URLs, deleted pages, and duplicate versions of the same content. Keep only the final live URLs you want Google to consider for indexing.

Update canonical tags where needed so they match the preferred page version. If the page should be indexed, the sitemap URL and canonical should usually align. If they do not, decide which URL is the preferred one and make both signals consistent.

Refresh the sitemap when you remove or replace content. If your site structure changes, the sitemap should change too. A sitemap is not a one-time setup file. It needs to reflect the current site.

After making corrections, resubmit the sitemap in Google Search Console and monitor the indexing reports. Changes are not always immediate. Google may take time to crawl the updated sitemap and process the cleaner signals. This is expected behaviour.

What to expect after fixing sitemap problems

Cleaning up a sitemap does not guarantee instant indexing, but it helps Google spend crawl time on the right pages. Discovery may become more consistent, especially for new or updated content. If pages still do not index, the cause may be outside the sitemap, such as content quality or on-site SEO issues. For related checks, see Common On-Site SEO Mistakes and How to Avoid Them.

A useful sitemap is small, current, and consistent with the live site. If every listed URL is indexable, canonicalized correctly, and up to date, the file becomes a clearer guide for Google instead of a source of mixed signals.

[42

post-12190","manual_kb","type-manual_kb","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","manualknowledgebasecat-miscellaneous
["GET
