Sendmail is one of the oldest and most influential mail transfer agents (MTAs) used to send and receive email on Unix and Linux systems. An MTA is software responsible for routing email messages between mail servers using the SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally developed in 1981 by Erik Allman, Sendmail helped shape the modern email infrastructure and became the default mail server on many Unix-based operating systems for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

Although newer alternatives such as Postfix and Exim have become more popular in recent years, Sendmail is still used in some enterprise environments and legacy systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
